United Overseas Bank (Thai) (UOB (Thai)) today announced that 25 of the company’s business bankers will undertake the Banker’s Executive Certification Programme as part of the Bank’s commitment to deepen the digital skills of its people.
UOB (Thai) has partnered Mahidol University International College to design this year’s curriculum which focuses on equipping UOB’s business bankers with digital skills and knowledge to support their customers’ growth in an increasingly digital economy. UOB business bankers undergoing the Banker’s Executive Certification Programme will be able to deepen their knowledge in the areas of digital banking, blockchain technology, risk management and regional regulatory frameworks.
The UOB-Mahidol Banker’s Executive Certification Programme adds to a suite of training programmes run by UOB (Thai) to ensure its employees are equipped with the relevant skillsets and agile mindsets for the future. The Bank invested more than 19 million baht in 2018 in training programmes.
Ms Sayumrat Maranate, Country Head of Business Banking, UOB (Thai), said, “Digital disruption creates opportunities, especially for small businesses to adapt and to grow. We want to make sure that our business bankers are prepared to help pave the way for Thai enterprises to succeed. The course enables our bankers to remain relevant when supporting our clients seize opportunities in the dynamic digital economy.”
Of the 25 small business bankers who will be taking part in the programme this year, six are past graduates who, having benefited from the previous curriculum, wanted to continue to keep abreast of business and banking trends.
Associate Professor Chulathida Chomchai, M.D., Dean of Mahidol University International College, said, “UOB has worked closely with Mahidol University International College to come up with a course syllabus that focuses more intensely on current topics including digital banking, blockchain technology and risk mitigation, regulations and compliance. Not only are the mega trends in the banking industry included in the programme, but also the soft skills in leadership and people management.”
Ms Sanchalee Nathaphan, Executive Director, Business Banking at UOB (Thai), said “As a team manager, I saw a significant improvement in myself and the team’s capabilities after graduating from the course. Small businesses are being challenged to digitalise to stay ahead and we need to have the knowledge to help our clients sharpen their competitive advantage. With the knowledge and skillsets provided by the programme, we are more confident when it comes to counselling our clients.”
The three-month UOB-Mahidol Banker’s Executive Certification Programme combines classroom-based study with practical skills training. It was first rolled out in 2017 as part of UOB’s career leadership development programme to encourage continuous training and skills development among its employees. Over the course of three years since the programme inception, the Bank expects to train about 69 business bankers in total.
