“White Lines” wins Thailand’s 5th UOB Painting of the Year Competition
United Overseas Bank (Thai) PCL today announced the winners of its 5th UOB Painting of the Year competition at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.
The top prize in the competition, the UOB Painting of the Year award, was given to Mr. Sinlapachai Chuchan for his work titled “White Lines.” Mr. Sinlapachai uses light and lines to illustrate hope in a fishing village that has been isolated by modernisation.
Mr. Peter Foo, President and Chief Executive Office of UOB (Thai), said, “Over the last five years, many emerging and established artists have been promoted and recognised through the UOB Painting of the Year competition. Their creativity and passion are the reasons for our continued support of the arts in Thailand.
“I would like to congratulate the winners of the competition and encourage all artists to continue to pursue their passion and develop their potential.”
Mr. Sinlapachai will receive US$25,000 or 750,000 baht for winning the top honour in the competition. He will also compete with the other three UOB Painting of the Year competition winners in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore for the regional prize – the Southeast Asian UOB Painting of the Year Award – and stand a chance to win a one-month residency programme at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.
This year’s judging panel of Professor Preecha Thaothong, national artist and a lecturer with the Painting Department of Silpakorn University; Mr. Amarit Chusuwan, Dean of the Painting Department of Silpakorn University; and Professor Vichoke Mukdamanee, national artist and a lecturer at the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts of Silpakorn University
Professor Vichoke said all judges were impressed by Mr. Sinlapachai’s ability to illustrate the fishermen’s perennial struggle to earn a living through the use of vigorous brushstrokes that convey emotions effectively.
