UOB (Thai)’s celebration of the Lunar New Year signifies deep bonds
with the Thai-Chinese Community
UOB (Thai) ushered in the Lunar New Year with a special visit by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in Bangkok’s historic Yaowarat district, also known as Bangkok China Town.
This is the third time HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has visited UOB (Thai)’s branch located in a part of the city which symbolises the strong connection between the Chinese and Thai business communities.
Mr. Lim Keng Teck, Executive Director of Channels and Human Resources, Mr. Sanchai Apisaksirikul, Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services and Ms. Sunee Kultrawut, Senior Vice President of Area 1 and other UOB executives were present to welcome HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to the UOB (Thai) branch. They also had the privilege of escorting HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on the tram ride around the district.
Since 2012, UOB (Thai) has sponsored trams for visitors to Thailand’s China Town on Yaowarat Road and nearby areas during the Lunar New Year festivities. The tram tradition was created as a gesture of good will and deep respect for the local Thai-Chinese people within the area.
Mr. Lim Keng Teck said UOB (Thai) has nine branches in the approximately three square kilometre Yaowarat district to cater to the financial needs of the Thai-Chinese community - a group that UOB has built strong relationships with since 1999 when the Bank established its full local presence. The district is known for its mix of rich Chinese heritage and vibrant local businesses.
UOB (Thai)’s investment in the China Town area forms part of the Bank’s wider branch strategy. Yaowarat is part of the China Town cluster with a total of 11 branches. In all, the Bank has identified 11 areas countrywide in which UOB will deepen its presence.
The Bank plans to expand its branch network in these areas over the next two years, including opening new branches in Chiang Mai, Udonthani, Chonburi, Phuket and greater Bangkok. The expansion is based on expected de-centralisation of wealth across Thailand over the next three to five years.
“As a relatively small bank in Thailand, we need to be focused and stay focused on how best to support our customers. Our branch locations must be where our customers live and work.” Mr. Lim said.
UOB (Thai) is also planning to launch a series of ‘People Initiatives’ for its branch-based employees over the next six months. These initiatives will focus on how they can deliver service excellence and deepen the relationships UOB has with its customers.
